What are tags and how to use them

What are tags

Tags in Radio Cult serve two powerful purposes: organising your media and automating your broadcasts.

  1. Media organisation:

Tags let you group media in a flexible, folder-like system. You can assign multiple tags to any piece of media, making it easy to:

  • Filter and search your library by tag,
  • Group related files (e.g. genre, mood, show segments), and
  • Quickly find what you need, even as your library grows.
  1. Broadcast automation:

Tags also supercharge your automation options.

  • You can add one or more tags to any playlist.
  • When that playlist runs, your streaming server will randomly select and play media with the matching tag(s).
  • This means you don’t need to manually curate every playlist. Just tag your media, assign those tags to a playlist, and schedule it - done!

Bonus: Use tags as intros

Want a playlist or scheduled event to start with a station sting, jingle, or message? Easy.

  • Tag your intro media (e.g. “sting” or “event-intro”).
  • Assign that tag to the Intro field of the scheduled event.
  • When the event starts, the streaming server will choose one of the tagged files and play it first. It’s that easy.

Adding media to a tag

There are three separate ways to add media to a tag:

  1. Adding media to a tag on the Tags page,
  2. Adding a single piece of media to a tag on the Media page, and
  3. Bulk adding multiple pieces of media to a tag on the Media page.

Adding media to a tag on the Tags page

To add media to a tag via the Tags page, please complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Tag you want to add media to. The Tag side drawer will appear on the right hand side of your screen.

  1. Click the Add media (+) button. The Select media modal will appear.

  1. Click the piece of media you want to add to the tag.

Repeat step 3 to add all the media you want to the relevant tag.

Adding a single piece of media to a tag on the Media page

To add a single piece of media to a tag via the Media page, please complete the following steps:

1. Click Media in the left hand side menu. You will be navigated to the Media page.

2. Identify the piece of media you want to add the tag to within the Media table. Click the Tags cell within the table row the piece of media corresponds to. The Tags dropdown will appear.

Bulk adding multiple pieces of media to a tag on the Media page

To bulk add multiple pieces of media to a tag via the Media page, please complete the following steps:

1. On the Media page, identify the pieces of media you want to add to the tag within the Media table. For each piece of media, click the checkbox positioned at the very left of the corresponding table row. The Bulk actions menu will appear at the bottom of your screen.

2. Click the Add tags button in the Bulk actions menu. The Tags dropdown will appear.

3. Identify and click the tag you want the piece(s) of media added to.

The piece(s) of media will now added to the tag. Repeat step 3 to have the piece(s) of media be added to multiple tags.

Adding a tag to a playlist

A playlist can include as many different tags as you desire.

Further, the same tag can added to a playlist multiple times. This is useful for automation purposes when your streaming server is broadcasting the relevant playlist. Say your playlist is structured with the following tags:

  1. ROCK
  2. ROCK
  3. ROCK

When the playlist is being broadcasted, your streaming server will “randomly” choose a piece of media with the ROCK tag for the first tag entry. Then it will repeat this process for each subsequent ROCK tag entry. It will also ensure for each subsequent tag entry that a different ROCK-tagged piece of media will be broadcasted (where possible).

As you can see this allows you to set the tone of each playlist, without having to explicit choose every individual track in the playlist.

To add a tag to a playlist, please complete the following steps:

1. Click Playlists in the left hand side menu. You will be navigated to the Playlists page.

2. Identify the playlist you want to add the tag to within the Playlists table. Click the table row it corresponds to. The Playlists side drawer will appear on the right hand side of your screen.

3. Click the Add tags button. The Tags dropdown will appear.

4. Identify and click the tag you want to add to the playlist.

The tag will now be added to the playlist. Repeat step 4 to add multiple tags to the relevant playlist.

Please note: just like pieces of media assigned to a playlist, a tag can also be reordered to a different position in the playlist. Simply drag and drop the desired tag into its new position.
